All About Kelly

I am really excited about getting started on this blog and writing about topics about education! My name is Kelly Robertson and right now I am in my sophomore year at Appalachian Bible College. I am in the elementary education program and I absolutely cannot wait to graduate and become a teacher. Ever since I was a little girl I have dreamed about becoming a teacher. I loved to go out in our garage and set up my stuffed animals and teach them whatever I had learned at school that day. I had never really given a lot of thought as to what kind of school that I want to teach at. Last year I spent a week at at a Christian school and I loved it. I would like to teach either second or third grade. The kids are just so sweet and so ready and eager to learn something so I think that it would be so much fun to teach one of these grades.
I can look back to my elementary school years and remember some of the best teachers that I had in school. They are the teachers that I want to be like in some way when I teach. They explained things really well and it seemed like they really cared for their students. They spent so much time making sure that we understood what they were teaching about. One of my main goals for when I become a teacher is for my students to know that I am always available and willing to be there for them whenever they need help or anything at all. I think that there are a lot of teachers out there that do not really want to help their students with anything and therefore the students just do not learn anything.

I am sure that you are looking forward to having your own classroom one day. I hope that you are enjoying the experiences that you are having during your classroom observations, and that you are tucking away some good ideas of what you might do in your own classroom. I think that it is very neat that you have wanted to be a teacher since you were a little girl. I think that with some of us that's just the way God made us. We have always been teaching.:) I think that your comments about being a teacher that is really concerned about your students is important. They need to know that they can trust you and that you want to know them. Then, you develop a sense of family, and that each person is important and hopefully feels like they have a sense of belonging. It is definitely not all books and worksheets...it takes heart!

Kelly,
I know how you feel about being ready to graduate so that you can get out there and teach. I get a little thrill every time I realize that I only have one year left. I really appreciated that you pointed out the importance of being available to students. Yes, we are in the classroom to teach, but realizing that our life example is what will really teach and mold the student is what should be important. Students are able to tell when a teacher loves them and care about them when the teacher takes the time to show that love and is available to the students individually as much as possible.

I can see you teaching your stuffed animals in a garage! That's too cute...I'm sure we've all done something similar at some point in our childhood. It sounds like you had good role models to look up to as an elementary student. I know you'll be a great teacher one day; and just like you said, it's very critical that the students know that they are important to you.
